This race re-cap is long overdue, but before this event is here again in September, I wanted to write down my memories of this spectacular day. This was the 2nd Annual SUP the River Race held at the Toms River Country Club and on the Toms River. I can’t stop raving about how wonderful this day and race was. Thanks to the TR Chamber of Commerce for hosting this event and to all of the people who worked behind the scenes (especially Noelle Carino and Mike Jacobus). Jersey Shore Mermaids had a vendor tent alongside some other local businesses and the Barnegat Bay Partnership.
This race offers 3 options, so there is something for everyone. The 6 mile race was a beach start and then 3 loops on a well-marked course that went from the country club to Water Street Bar and Grille. There was a 2 mile option which is perfect for the more casual paddler, or someone just getting into racing. They also held a kid’s fun paddle that was about a half mile in length. The weather and wind conditions were perfect – a very light wind, sun, and flat water. Every other race this season (aside from the Shore Paddle in Shrewsbury) has had super high winds, but the conditions at SUP the River allowed you to take in more of the beautiful homes along the water and be able to cheer on your friends as you passed each other on the loops.
The race was very well attended which made it more competitive for the athletes.
I loved seeing so many of my mermaid friends racing for the first time, as well as all of the ladies I have been racing alongside all summer. After the races, Jersey Mikes provided food for the racers and the awards ceremony took place along the water.
Check out these awesome race awards! Fellow paddler and race director, Mike Jacobus, handmade these beauties all summer. I was lucky enough to secure the 1st place female in the 6 mile race and score this paddle for my wall! You can check out the results here.
Congrats to Lynda and Kate who pushed me the entire way and placed 2nd and 3rd in the 12’6″ category and to Josie (not pictured) for her 1st place finish in the 14′ division.
. . . and what is a SUP race without a celebratory cocktail with your fellow mermaids?!?
I am already registered for next year’s race! You can register too by clicking here.
Paddle on <3,
